Fatality: A man has died after a crane collapsed at a marina
A workman was crushed to death when a huge crane collapsed on top of him at a marina today.
The massive hoist was being dismantled at a boatyard on the Grand Union Canal when it crashed down on top of the man trapping him under the debris.
Fellow workers frantically tried to release the victim as they waited for emergency service to arrive.
A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said that despite paramedics' efforts to revive the man, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The drama unfolded at Willowbridge Marina in Bletchley near Milton Keynes, Bucks.
Staff were dismantling the crane which was used to move boats to and from the water, when the accident happened at 1.30pm.
Controllers from the South Central Ambulance Service scrambled an air ambulance, two land ambulance and officer to the scene after receiving the 999 call.
The medics worked on the man at the boatyard but were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nobody else was believed to have been injured in the collapse.
Police said that the man was not an employee of the marina but was working on the site.
The marina was cordoned off by police so that they could investigate the cause of the collapse.
Inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive were also on the scene starting to make preliminary enquiries about the incident.
